The legendary journey of Eleven and the Hawkins gang officially came to an end on New Year’s Eve, but the conversation is far from over. With the release of the new Netflix documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, fans have discovered that the Duffer Brothers originally considered several different paths for the series finale—some of which might have changed everything.
Discarded Storyboards: A Different Fate for Eleven
One of the biggest revelations from the documentary is a glimpse at the writers’ room storyboards. Early concepts suggested a much clearer ending for Eleven. In the version that aired, Eleven’s fate was left somewhat ambiguous after she sacrificed herself to stop Vecna. However, early notes revealed a plan where Eleven was explicitly “gone, but not dead.” Another discarded concept showed Hopper being fully aware of Eleven’s “fakeout death” and working behind the scenes to keep her safe, a sharp contrast to the emotional, uncertain ending fans actually received.
The Mystery of the Missing Monsters
Many fans were confused why the final battle in the “Abyss” dimension didn’t feature the classic monsters like Demogorgons or Demodogs. The documentary confirms that the writers actually debated including them. In fact, there was even a planned scene involving a nest of Demogorgon eggs—a tribute to the movie Aliens. Ultimately, the Duffer Brothers decided to cut these elements to keep the focus entirely on Vecna and the Mind Flayer, fearing that adding too many creatures would make the finale feel “too crowded.”
Chaos Behind the Scenes: Writing While Filming
The documentary also provides a candid look at the high-pressure environment of the final season. Shockingly, the Duffer Brothers admitted that they began filming the final episodes without a finished script for the series finale. This led to significant stress on set, as the cast and crew had to film major scenes without knowing exactly how the story would conclude. This “writing-on-the-fly” approach is likely what led to the many alternate ideas that are now coming to light.
